Smart Energy Monitoring

Every domestic property in the UK should have a smart meter installed by 2020. But, this is only the first stage of developments. Research and development is currently going on that looks at how every electrical appliance could be monitored and switched on or off depending upon national demand for electricity. As Smart meters are already capable of real-time monitoring every half hour - energy companies could start providing householders with "Time of Use" incentives like switching off a refrigerator for half and hour during peak national demand - in return for a lower tariff. This will happen automatically using the next generation smart energy devices.
